Celebrate with us on campus, 17 May

As part of this year's 50th celebrations, the University of Waikato is hosting a Community Open Day on Saturday 17 May. 

Designed with our supporters and the community in mind, Community Open Day is a free event featuring themed hubs of activity around campus hosting a variety of activities, interactive exhibits, demonstrations, tours and mini-lectures - there's something for everyone. 

And if you're planning on joining us for Community Open Day, make sure you join us in the afternoon at the Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts, where we're hosting an event especially for alumni. To find out more and to register, click here



PM on campus to unveil commemorative plaque

Prime Minister John Key officially launched the University's 50th anniversary celebrations with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque. 

He was joined by Chancellor Rt Hon Jim Bolger, Vice-Chancellor Roy Crawford and Hamilton Mayor and alumna Julie Hardaker to celebrate this historic event. Read more

Academy Award for alumnus

University of Waikato alumnus Jon Allitt was in Hollywood enjoying a celebratory drink in the lobby of a Beverly Hills hotel.  

He was celebrating because he'd just been honoured by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (yes, that Academy), with a technical achievement award. Read more

Alumna marks momentous occasion in Tauranga 

The University of Waikato celebrated a significant 'first' when alumna and lecturer Nadine Ballam graduated with her PhD, becoming the first student to study from undergraduate to doctorate level in Tauranga.

Nadine began her Bachelor of Teaching in 2004 and her PhD focuses on the experiences of gifted and talented young people from low socio-economic environments in New Zealand. Read more

Arts and Social Sciences: The University has launched a journal, Mayhem, dedicated to showcasing the creative writing talents of staff, students and alumni.

Computing and Mathematical Sciences: A conservation management system designed by FCMS students has won a major prize at the New Zealand finals of the Microsoft Imagine Cup.

Education: Friends and former flatmates Ashton Hawke, Jess Boerema and Kristin Potaka, graduated in April and are now teaching together at Tauranga Intermediate School. 

Law: Te Piringa - Faculty of Law has signed a letter of intent with the School of Law at China's Yantai University, promoting closer cooperation between the two schools. 

Management: Waikato Management School will host a Global Leadership Forum in Hamilton on 12 May, featuring alumnus and Unilever President Jan Zijderveld. 

Māori and Pacific Development: Dean and Pro Vice-Chancellor Māori, Professor Linda Smith, and husband Professor Graham Smith, have been appointed Fellows of the American Educational Research Association.

Science and Engineering: Alumnus Matt Dromgool brews his dream career designing craft brewing systems for Natural Brew Inc.

Congratulations to the 2014 recipients of the Alumni Prize for Excellence. These prizes recognise academic excellence and are awarded to second-year students with the highest grade point average in each School or Faculty during their first year.
