Getting to know: Joshua Pietras

Josh is our alumni representative in Wellington. If you're in the area and keen to catch up with other Waikato alumni, send him an email:

What did you study and when did you graduate?
At Waikato, I studied a Bachelor of Laws with Honours and a Bachelor of Science, majoring in psychology. I graduated from Waikato in April 2014 and then went on to do a Master of Laws in international security law at the Australian National University. I'm now working at Minter Ellison Rudd Watts in banking and finance law.

Where do you live?

What is the best thing about where you live?
Wellington is the coolest little capital in the world. It's so easy to get around, and there's great food and coffee.

And the worst?
The weather is pretty awful...and the earthquakes!

What's something people might not know about you?
I can speak Portuguese (I used to live in Brazil) and am now learning Indonesian.

What do you miss about your time studying at Waikato?
The people. Waikato University has such a community feel to it. The lecturers are so approachable and the students really help each other out. Also, the Rec Centre is pretty awesome.

Best piece of advice you have ever been given?
Work hard, play even harder!

Favourite movie?
My favourite movie would have to be City of God. It's a Brazilian film about life in the Rio slums and one boy's mission to escape a life of crime through photography. Very inspiring.

Do you catch up with other alumni where you are?
Yes, there's quite a big network of Waikato alumni in Wellington. Although we're just starting out, we hope to build the community up over the next few years.
