Lt Col Tenby Powell: From Soldier to Entrepreneur
Alumni and friends are invited to hear University of Waikato alumnus Lt Col Tenby Powell share his journey as business leader and long-serving army officer.
Lt Col Powell is Director of Hunter Powell Investments, and the entrepreneurial force behind the success of the New Zealand Rental Group – which he grew from humble beginnings into a rental equipment leader with 84 business units across the country. His military service includes a tour of duty with UN peacekeeping forces in the Middle East.
Graduating from Waikato with a Bachelors degree in 1987, he went on to hold senior management positions at Fletcher Challenge and the Skellerup Group Ltd (which became Viking Pacific Group).
Tenby has led high growth leveraged businesses since 1997 and has extensive experience in mergers & acquisitions, company cultural development, marketing, communications & brand experience. He is the Chairman of Envoy 360 FZ LLC, (a New Zealand owned maritime security and risk management company); Chairman of Waikato Link Ltd (the commercialization and technology transfer company of the University of Waikato), Director of Antarctica New Zealand (a crown entity responsible for developing, managing and executing New Zealand Government activities in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean), Director & Trustee for the Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust (Westpac Rescue Helicopter) and Director of Angel Link (a national angel investment network to back New Zealand high growth technology ventures, with an emphasis on life sciences, engineering and ICT).
Tenby's military service in the New Zealand Army regular and reserve forces spans 27 years, including a posting as Deputy Commander of a UN mission in Lebanon in 2001-2002.
