Making worthwhile contributions

University of Waikato alumna Dr Bev Gatenby, has a long association with the University. She also has a passion for her community and building the profile of its sector organisations. As former CEO of Trust Waikato, she saw the investment fund grow over $100 million, giving $80 million to the community. Read more about her journey here...

Academics honoured for service and contributions

Alumni lead the way at TEDxRuakura

Another successful TEDxRuakura event took place last month, and four Waikato alumni were behind it all. As well as having our alumni on the organisation committee, many were featured as guest speakers at the annual event. Winner of our double pass giveaway Gemma Slack, pictured above, far right, said the experience was "phenomenal - a total mind massage". Bringing music news back to fans

Two University of Waikato alumni are using their digital marketing and technology expertise to make their, and anyone elses, passion for music easier to manage. Ronan Mason and Dan Wanigasekera both graduated from Waikato in 2002 and recently launched MuzeRoom - a site that curates music news for the artists you truly love. CBD office has hot desks available for alumni

If you're in Hamilton and looking for a place to do some work, we'd love to host you in our CBD office. We offer free wifi and a variety of working spaces. Come and visit us on the corner of Ward and Anglesea streets.

Get togethers in Shanghai and Samoa

Alumni have been busy networking overseas, with an event held in Shanghai in June while Associate Professor Wayne Rumbles hosted Law alumni in Samoa. More photos can be viewed here

Around the faculties

Arts and Social Sciences: Waikato doctoral student Nick Braae has recently completed his thesis which focused on a musical analysis of British rock band Queen.

Computing and Mathematical Sciences: Team Hodor from the Gallagher Group were the overall winners of the third New Zealand Cyber Security Challenge which took place at the University of Waikato last month.

Education: Two University of Waikato academics have welcomed the news that the government will add digital technologies to the New Zealand school curriculum by 2018. Associate Professor Garry Falloon from the Faculty of Education and computer scientist Nilesh Kanji have been awarded $30,000 as part of MBIE’s Unlocking Curious Minds.

Law: Top law man joins Waikato. Recently retired Senior Court of Appeal judge and president of the New Zealand Law commission Sir Grant Hammond will come on board on a part time basis as a Professor of Judicial Studies. Don't forget, you can also read the latest Law eNews here.
 
Management: The University of Waikato’s Management Communication Department has been awarded international gold standard for public relations by the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). Waikato University is one of 37 universities in the world – and one of only five outside the United States – to be awarded PRSA certification.

Māori and Pacific Development: Three University of Waikato students started their first year of study on a good note after being awarded the Edna Money Future Pacific Leaders' Scholarship that will cover their fees.

Science and Engineering: Electronic engineering student Harrisson Jull is flying to Florida this month to take up a year-long Fulbright scholarship where he'll be researching aspects of light.

Tauranga: The University of Waikato has announced it will boost its contribution to the Tauranga CBD Campus project.

On campus lately

The University of Waikato is proud to announce it has received a full five star rating from QS Stars Ranking. A successful alumni event took place in June when Distinguished Alumnus and Wales Rugby Coach Warren Gatland visited Campus for a Q&A session. Photos can be viewed hereThe University of Waikato remembers the late Vice-Chancellor Roy Crawford, who passed away in June. Five University of Waikato alumni received Queens Birthday Honours. View the list of recipients here. Three architectural firms were commissioned to provide concepts for a new Marae and multi-purpose complex. Plenty of feedback has been received and the University will provide updates along the way. The latest edition of Horizons Magazine is out now and can be viewed online.  

What's coming up

The University's annual Kingitanga Day will be held on September 8th this year. Honouring our relationships with the Kīngitanga and Waikato-Tainui, Kīngitanga Day is a free public event that includes a comprehensive programme of seminars, workshops, displays and performances showcasing our cultural vibrancy and diversity.  Nau mai, haere mai – come celebrate with us. Love Uni sports? Join the WUCS board. Waikato University Combined Sports (WUCS) is the governing body that unifies the University Rugby, Football, Netball, Hockey, Rowing and Cricket clubs and is currently seeking to fill vacancies for two appointed Board Members. For more information and to apply, contact WUCS administrator Megan AikenheadHelp young tech graduates and become an Ambassador. 45 Waikato Uni graduates work as Futureintech Ambassadors in schools around New Zealand, and they'd love to have more.
