2010 Alumni Association Masters Scholar

Congratulations
to Melanie Haeata, winner of the 2010 Alumni Association Masters
Scholarship. Pictured with her daughter and Vice-Chancellor Prof Roy
Crawford.
Melanie
enrolled at the University of Waikato in 2005, completing her Bachelor
of Social Sciences with Honours in 2009. She is now working towards her
Masters with a thesis that examines anxiety and depression in antenatal
couples. Melanie is a native Hamiltonian and the solo mother
of
her 8 year old daughter. We are delighted to announce that
Melanie has also been awarded a Freemasons scholarship, which was
presented to her by the Duke of Gloucester in Wellington.
Every second year the University of Waikato Alumni Association
awards a masters
scholarship worth $5,500. It is always a difficult decision
with
so many deserving individuals in need of financial support to complete
their studies and this year was no exception.
However, there is
no doubt that the 2010 recipient could not be more qualified to receive
the award and the University of Waikato is honored to count Melanie
Haeata as an alumnus.
As well as being a solo mother and
undertaking an Honours degree, Melanie has found time to work with
autistic preschool children and volunteer as an English language tutor
at the Hamilton Migrant Resource Centre. If that wasn’t
enough to
fill her time, Melanie has become the national student representative
for the Institute of Clinical Psychology, the secretary of the Waikato
branch of the New Zealand Psychological Society and is a representative
on the Waikato Clinical Psychology Educational Trust.
As part of
her training, Melanie is currently undertaking a clinical placement at
the Psychology Centre in Hamilton and we wish her well in her goal to
practice as a clinical psychologist. It is clear that she
will be
an outstanding asset to the Waikato psychology community.
